Meade exhibited a flair for the dramatic in a campaign full of spirited comebacks and one-goal victories. Against Broadneck on Tuesday night in the Maryland 4A East boys’ soccer final, it looked like the Mustangs would buck the trend. A two-goal advantage swelled to three shortly after halftime as a clinical attack took its chances to build a comfortable lead.

Meade survived a late-game scare for a 3-2 win in Fort Meade and a place in Saturday’s state semifinals against Blair at Richard Montgomery.

“We knew they would come out with nothing to lose after we went ahead by three,” senior Samuel Dupuy said. “In the last seven minutes, we had to defend for the championship. Defense wins championships, and that’s what happened tonight.”

Dupuy opened the scoring eight minutes into the game when he caught the Broadneck goalkeeper off his line and sent a looping header off a bouncing cross into the back of the net. Freshman Silas Baker doubled the hosts’ lead 20 minutes later with a 20-yard left-footed curler into the top corner. Ten minutes after the break, Meade (16-1) took a 3-0 lead when Paul Kayson fought off a defender to finish Samuel Solomon’s cross from point-blank range.

“This was the most important game. Broadneck is the only team that beat us. They kept us from an undefeated season,” Solomon said. “We fell down 3-0 in that game before coming back, so we knew they were ready to do the same this time.”

Broadneck (10-6-1) risked everything to throw numbers forward and crowd Meade’s box late in the second half, and the Bruins were rewarded on a pair of set pieces. Broadneck freshman Kevin Hertel headed home a throw-in at the near post before Ben Boone scored directly off a corner kick to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 12 minutes to play.

Without starting goalkeeper Danny Castillo, who received a red card in the previous round, backup Christopher Marx made two of his four saves in the final minutes to seal Meade’s first region title since 1991.

“When coach said that Chris would be the starter, we all believed in him,” Solomon said. “People in the school doubted us, Broadneck doubted us, but we believed, and we’re going to states.”
