Man arrested in June homicide in NE Washington
Version 0 of 1. D.C. police have arrested a 19-year-old in the shooting death of a man during a dispute in the Langston Terrace neighborhood of Northeast Washington, according to the department and an arrest affidavit filed in court. Rasheed Murphy of Southeast Washington was charged with first-degree murder. Police said Arvel Lee Stewart, 26, was fatally shot in June in a courtyard in the 2200 block of H Street NE, just off Benning Road. Police said in the affidavit that Stewart and others intervened in a fight, angering the suspect, who returned later wearing a ski mask and armed with a 9mm pistol. Police said Stewart was shot twice in the forehead. Authorities said in the court document that they did not know what the initial dispute was about, but noted that in Rasheed’s Instagram account, he identifies himself as a member of the 21st and I Street crew, which police said has a long-running dispute with a group from Langston Terrace, where the victim lived and was killed. At the time of his arrest, Murphy was being held in the D.C. jail on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon. Police said they arrested him in September after he was spotted in Langston Terrace with a gun. Murphy has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Nov. 30. |
