Security has been stepped up at India and Pakistan's Attari Wagah international border after a man crashed his car into the gates.

Surinder Singh Kang, a Canadian of Indian origin, broke through four security barriers before being stopped.

He said he wanted to visit Sikh religious sites in Pakistan.

Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel told BBC Hindi's Robin Singh in Amritsar that they now planned to install heavier barriers.

India and Pakistan hold a daily military ceremony at Wagah-Attari - their only land border crossing. A suicide attack there on the Pakistani side a year ago killed dozens of people.

Originally from a village in Jalandhar in the Indian state of Punjab, Mr Kang had gone to Canada in 1995, senior BSF official Anil Paliwal said.

Mr Kang, 42, appeared to be suffering from a psychiatric disorder, he added.

The BSF first said that Mr Kang had been stopped before hitting the gate, but a Pakistani newspaper then released a picture of the vehicle crashed against the gate.
