Bristol Crown Court heard that in a police interview he admitted attacking his mother but could not remember hitting his father. Their bodies were discovered, slumped in their chairs, by their daughter the day after the couple died.
Passing sentence at Bristol Crown Court, Mr Justice John Royce described the murders as "brutal and heartless".

The bodies were discovered when Mr Middleton's sister turned up at the house, in Beamans Lane, the following day. Middleton was arrested after an armed stand-off with police.
