Version 0 of 1.

Kathryn and Spence Spencer’s children are grown and have moved out of their D.C. home. The couple would like to remake their son’s 17-by-11-foot bedroom as an elegant guest room and home office. They want to keep some of their artwork but otherwise are ready for a completely new look.

Designer David Benton divides the space into two zones and chooses furniture that can serve multiple purposes in a guest room/home office.

Benton, of Rill Architects (301-656-4166, www.rillarchitects.com), is based in Bethesda.

Benjamin Moore’s Sea Salt is a calming neutral backdrop for the mix of items in the room.

Side-by-side desks allow for ample working space, with one also acting as a nightstand.

A pendant fixture over the bed adds general lighting and makes a modern statement.

Mixed patterns in the bedding, with masculine plaid on the shams and a pinstripe duvet, will be suitable for any guest.

A task lamp and a vintage-inspired table lamp provide lighting for reading or working at the desk.

A comfortable chair acts as office seating without looking corporate. Leather upholstery adds warmth and sophistication.

The wood nightstand adds character to the room, as well as extra storage.
