More than 30 college students were taken to hospitals in the Richmond, Va. area Sunday night after a bus overturned while returning them to their schools after the Thanksgiving holiday, authorities said.

The bus, which originated in Richmond, was carrying 50 passengers when it went out of control on a ramp in Chesterfield County, according to state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. She said the bus driver was also injured in the incident, which sent the bus onto its side.

One of those on the bus was seriously injured, Geller said. The others received minor injuries, she said. Early accounts listed one critical injury, with most of the other injuries described as bumps and bruises.

According to Geller, the crash occurred in the northern part of Chesterfield, as the bus was going around a curve on a ramp onto southbound Chippenham Parkway from Powhite Parkway.

The chartered bus had picked up students at Virginia Commonweath University in Richmond, and was to make its first stop at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, she said. It was to go on to Radford University and Virginia Tech.

Geller said that senior state police trooper N.M. Nash charged the bus driver, Thomas B. Chidester, 58, of Salem, Va., with reckless driving.

An investigation is ongoing, Geller said.
