Brightening up wood paneling, without painting over it
Version 0 of 1. Robin and John Herron are hoping to refresh the 23-by-14-foot living room in their Alexandria home, to give it a brighter look. They don’t want to paint the paneling, but they are open to other suggestions for lightening that wall. They are looking for a comfortable, cozy space for reading and listening to music. Designers Wendy Danziger and Mary Biletnikoff hang light-colored stick art from the ceiling and choose neutral furnishings to soften the dark paneling. Danziger and Biletnikoff, of Danziger Designs (www.danzigerdesign.com, 301-365-3300), are based in Bethesda. [An inviting guest bedroom makeover for visiting grandsons] Warm up the walls with a soft gray, such as Collingwood by Benjamin Moore . A vibrant area rug grounds the room and helps define the seating area. Use accessories to bring the feel and texture of the outdoors into the room. Two floor lamps provide ample light for reading. A pair of bookcases provide storage for books and other cherished items. Side panels in the same color as the wall soften the long run of windows. Move the corner china cabinet to the opposite wall (not shown) to keep it closer to the dining room.
