Mr McMahon increased Labour's vote share by over 7% from the general election, with UKIP in second and the Conservatives third. Mr McMahon got 17,209 votes, with a vote share - 62% - that was up by more than 7% from the general election.

The Conservatives came third in what was the first by-election of this Parliament.
