Virginia 6A North region football final preview: Westfield at South County
Version 0 of 1. No. 6 Westfield (12-1) at No. 2 South County (13-0) What: Virginia 6A North region final When: Saturday, 2 p.m. Where: South County High School, Lorton Tickets: $10 How they got here: South County’s Kofi Bell capped a strong defensive effort by returning an interception 55 yards for the decisive touchdown in a 20-15 win against Robinson. Westfield switched things up offensively, moving quarterback Tyler Scanlon to wide receiver, where he caught three touchdowns and led the Bulldogs to a 31-7 win against Lake Braddock. When South County has the ball: The Stallions strive to keep defenses off-balance with their uptempo, option offense. The trio of quarterback DeAndre Clayton, running back DeMarcus Ramsey and wide receiver Dillon Spalding have powered South County’s offense to 41.8 points and 473.1 yards per game. Westfield was one of just two teams to hold them below 30 points, so expect the Stallions to attempt to thwart the Bulldogs’ defense by establishing the run early to open passing lanes. When Westfield has the ball: How the Bulldogs’ offense will look Saturday is anybody’s guess after last week’s revamp. At 6 feet 7, Scanlon gives Westfield a deep-ball threat, which keeps the defense from solely focusing on the Bulldogs’ run-based attack. Should Scanlon again split time at wide receiver and quarterback, the production of running back Tim Beard will be critical to Westfield’s offensive success. In three of the Bulldogs’ past four games, when Beard has rushed for at least 100 yards, they put up an average of 34.3 points. Skinny: Despite Westfield’s stout defensive effort, the Stallions pulled out a 26-19 win in the regular season behind Spalding’s 194 receiving yards and two scores. Westfield was without six of its offensive starters that night, meaning South County must look to its defense, led by linebacker Kevin Allen, to put together a strong performance similar to last week’s win. With the way South County lights up the scoreboard and with Westfield’s stingy defense allowing just 10.7 points per game, something has to give Saturday. |
