(about 10 hours later)
Police in Malaysia have arrested the head of a leading political think-tank and three policemen, in connection with the murder of a Mongolian model. A Malaysian court has given police until Sunday to question a leading political analyst over possible links to the murder of a Mongolian model.
The body of the model, named as Altantuya Shaariibuu, was found earlier this week on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. Three police officers have also been arrested over the death of Altantuya Shaariibuu, who is thought to have been shot before her body was blown up.
She had been shot and her body blown up with plastic explosives. According to the Malaysian press, the 28-year-old Mongolian woman came to Kuala Lumpur early last month.
The model is reported to have flown to Malaysia early last month to find a man by whom she had allegedly had a child. She hoped to confront a man she claimed had fathered her child, reports said.
Her sister and cousin, who had accompanied her, told the police that she had gone to the man's house on 19 October. Her sister and cousin, who had accompanied her to Malaysia, told police they had last seen her after she visited the man's house.
She was last seen alive later that day. Her remains were found on Monday. Her remains were found on Monday.
The political analyst at the centre of the murder investigation has not been named, but he is believed to be close to a number of senior members of the government. She is reported to have been shot twice in the head and her body blown up with plastic explosives.
He was arrested on Tuesday at his office in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. Police arrested a man on Tuesday and on Wednesday asked the court for more time to question him.
The three police officers detained include a chief inspector and a member of a special protection unit that provides security to Malaysia's leaders and visiting dignitaries. He was named by his defence team as Abdul Razak Baginda. He is a well-known and respected political and defence analyst who advises some of the country's most senior politicians.
His lawyer confirmed that Mr Abdul Razak knew the dead woman but said he was totally convinced of his client's innocence.
Three police officers from the elite special action squad were also arrested, one of them a chief inspector.
Malaysia's police chief has promised that there will be no cover up in the case.
