Maryland will study ex-offenders’ barriers to work, Hogan says
Version 0 of 1. Gov. Larry Hogan said his administration will conduct a one-year review of the legal and regulatory barriers ex-offenders face as they seek employment. The announcement came a day before the state’s Justice Reinvestment Coordinating Council is scheduled to submit its recommendations for reducing the state prison population by focusing more on community-based services. The work group will study which sanctions and regulations prevent ex-offenders from obtaining licenses that could lead to employment, and it will submit its findings to Hogan (R) in December 2016. — Ovetta Wiggins The U.S. Senate on Wednesday confirmed Dana J. Boente, a longtime Justice Department lawyer who lives in Arlington, as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. The confirmation is hardly a surprise, although experts have said it will lend more credibility to Boente as he leads a high-profile office with about 300 lawyers and other employees working in Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk and Newport News. Boente had been serving as the interim U.S. attorney for the district since late 2013. Under Boente’s leadership, prosecutors won corruption convictions against former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell (R) and his wife, Maureen, and convictions of CIA leaker Jeffrey Sterling under the Espionage Act. In a statement, Boente said: “It is a privilege to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia and United States.” — Matt Zapotosky Two men stole a 9-week-old dog in Manassas and beat up the dog’s owner, Prince William County police said. Officer Nathan Probus said police are looking for the suspects, including with a search Tuesday night with a helicopter and a police dog, but have not tracked down the men or the puppy. Police said that the victim, a 19-year-old from Oakton, was stopped in his car in the 8000 block of McLean Street in Manassas when two men in black masks walked up to him. The pair showed a gun and ordered the 19-year-old to get out of the car. They hit him several times and took his young pit bull, cellphone, keys and money before running off, police said. Probus said that the victim did not recognize the suspects. He was hospitalized with serious injuries, but they were not life-threatening. — Julie Zauzmer A pedestrian was fatally struck Wednesday morning along the Dulles Toll Road near the Wiehle Avenue exit in Reston, according to authorities. The incident happened about 6:30 a.m. as the man walked east on the road. He was taken to a hospital, according to officials with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, said Kimberly Gibbs, a spokeswoman for MWAA. Parts of the roadway were closed in the morning as investigators were on the scene. — Dana Hedgpeth |
