Conditions have now eased, although the Met Office has already issued yellow warnings for rain throughout the region for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Another Appleby resident, Sarah McKay, said: "It's just before Christmas and everybody has already lost everything. It's terrible."
Five flood warnings remain in place across Cumbria, covering areas around Pooley Bridge, a Keswick campsite, the Eden Golf Club, Armathwaite, and Carlisle's Rickerby Park.
In addition, the Met Office has issued yellow warnings for rain throughout the region for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
