Six held in Brussels over 'New Year's Eve attack plot' Six more held in Brussels over alleged New Year's Eve attack plot
(about 1 hour later)
Belgian police have detained six people during house searches in Brussels in an investigation into an alleged plot to carry out an attack in the city on New Year’s Eve. Six people are being held for questioning over an alleged New Year’s Eve attack plot in Brussels that led to the cancellation of a fireworks display and other festivities.
On Wednesday authorities cancelled annual New Year’s Eve celebrations and fireworks in the heart of Brussels after revealing an alleged jihadi plot to attack the capital. A judge will decide later on Thursday whether those detained can be held further. A total of eight people are now being held in the case, including two men who have been formally charged with terrorism-related offences following their arrests earlier this week, the federal prosecutor’s office said.
Two people arrested earlier this week, named as 30-year-old Said S and 27-year-old Mohammed K, would be held for another month after being charged with threatening to carry out a terrorist attack, prosecutors said. The six new suspects were detained following seven police raids in and around the Belgian capital in which computer equipment, mobile phones and “airsoft material” were seized, it added. Airsoft is a type of airgun.
Also on Thursday, Belgian prosecutors charged a tenth suspect over the terror attacks in Paris last month. An investigating judge will decide later on Thursday whether to keep the six in custody or release them, the prosecutor’s office added.

The city of 1.2 million people has been on high alert since France said several men involved in the deadly November attacks in Paris had links to Brussels, which is home to the headquarters of the European Union and Nato.
The prosecutor’s office said the two men already formally charged over the end-of-year plot had been ordered by a court to be detained for another month.
