Montgomery County police have arrested one man and cited another after saying the two engaged in a car chase on the Capital Beltway that began with a drug dispute in Prince George’s County and ended when one car crashed into vehicles while going the wrong way on a major thoroughfare.

Police said that no gunshots had been fired during the Thursday afternoon pursuit but that one of the men had pointed a handgun at the other while the two were stopped at a light on New Hampshire Avenue. A caller to 911 had reported possible gunfire on the Beltway in Montgomery County.

Authorities said in a statement that the two men knew each other and were arguing over an illegal drug sale before the chase began about 3:45 p.m. A police spokesman said the statement clarifies an earlier version of events, which stated that a female driver was fleeing another car.
