Gunmen entered an Indian air force base in Pathankot, near India’s border with Pakistan, early Saturday morning and exchanged fire with security forces inside the base, the police said. At least two of the attackers have been killed and at least five military personnel have been wounded, said Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, a senior police official based in Amritsar in the state of Punjab. The attack began around 3:30 a.m., and the fighting continued into the morning, officials said. As soon as the gunmen entered the base, they “indiscriminately started firing,” Mr. Singh said. He said it was not clear whether any security officers had been killed in the attack, and he did not say how many gunmen had entered the base. Reports from news agencies and local Indian news media outlets said there were at least four gunmen. An Indian air force spokeswoman was not immediately reachable on Saturday. India has accused Pakistan of arming and training insurgents fighting in the disputed Kashmir region, a charge Pakistan denies.
