Images have emerged on social media of what appears to be crowds breaking into and setting fires at the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran. Reports have emerged of crowds breaking into and setting fires at the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran.
The protests follow the Saudi execution of a highly regarded Shia Muslim cleric, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr on Saturday.  The Iranian police have dispersed the protestors from inside the embassy and the Iranian Foreign Ministry has appealed for calm, and to respect diplomatic premises, according to reports.  
One photograph, posted on Twitter, showed protesters outside the embassy building with small fires burning inside, while another showed a room with smashed furniture purportedly inside the building. Photos and video posted to social media, which have not been verified, show numerous protestors within the embassy compound, and fires lighting up the building. One video appears to show a Molotov cocktail being thrown at the building.
The images have not been verified, and some were posted by correspondents at Iranian news agencies and newspapers. An Iranian journalist who appears to be at the scene, Sobhan Hassanvand, posted images of masked protestors clutching a Saudi flag which appears to have been torn down, and video of protesters trashing rooms.

Al-Nimr was a prominent supporter of of peaceful protest within Saudi Arabia in 2011, in the country’s strongly Shia Eastern Province, known as the Qatif.  The region has been a constant source of tension for the Sunni al-Saud leadership in Riyadh.  
His execution was seen as a highly contentious move, and many analysts predicted that there would be unrest in Shia Muslim areas.
