Las Vegas police identify officers who killed man holding cellphone

Version 0 of 1. Las Vegas police have identified two officers who shot and killed a man who was holding a cellphone that was mistaken for a gun. Related: Las Vegas police fatally shoot suspect holding a cellphone mistaken for a gun Police on Saturday said 37-year-old sergeant Robert Bohanon and 27-year-old officer Blake Walford had been placed on routine administrative leave. The officers were assisting US marshals in arresting 23-year-old Keith Childress Jr, who was convicted last month of multiple crimes in Arizona, including armed robbery and aggravated assault. Las Vegas police said Childress was also accused of attempted murder. The man’s attorney, Brad Reinhart, said on Saturday that while Childress’ crimes were serious, they never included that charge. Police confronted Childress on Thursday and ordered him to drop what they thought was a gun in his right hand. Authorities said Childress disregarded the officers’ commands and advanced towards them. The two officers then opened fire, fatally striking Childress. Bohanon has been with the Las Vegas police for 18 years and Walford for more than a year. |
