Body found in suitcases pulled from Austrian lake Austrian police find bodies after suitcases surface on lake
(about 5 hours later)
Human remains have been found in two suitcases pulled from an Austrian lake. Police in Austria have discovered two bodies in a lake, one dismembered and hidden in two suitcases.
The remains appear to belong to a woman aged about 70, police say. The first suitcase was found on Sunday by a man walking near Traunsee lake by the town of Gmunden. A police dog found the second suitcase on Monday.
The suitcases were found in the Traunsee lake by the town of Gmunden, about 80km (50 miles) east of Salzburg. The first was discovered on Sunday by a walker, according to reports. Police said the body in the suitcases was probably that of a woman aged about 70.
The second case was found on Monday by a police sniffer dog. Police are working to identify the victim and establish a cause of death. Later on Monday, police announced they had found the body of a man. It is not clear whether the two are connected.
However the process is being hampered by the lack of a complete set of remains, they say. The male body was found at the bottom of the lake, a suitcase full of rock attached to a wrist, Austria's Kurier newspaper reports (in German).
The walker who fished the first case from the lake reported seeing a pair of hands and feet, local media say. Investigators are working to identify the victims and establish a cause of death. The process was being hampered in the case of the female victim by the lack of a complete set of remains, police said.
The walker who recovered the first case from the lake reported seeing a pair of hands and feet, local media say.
Gmunden lies about 80km (50 miles) east of Salzburg.
