Police in North Carolina say one person was killed and a police officer suffered an ankle injury when shooting broke out as police tried to serve an arrest warrant at a Charlotte home. One person was killed and an officer was shot in the ankle after police were fired on as they tried to serve an arrest warrant late on Sunday at a North Carolina home, authorities said.
A statement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department said officers tried to serve the warrant at about 9 pm on Sunday, when several people began shooting at them. Several people fired at officers who arrived to serve the warrant, police said in a news release, and officers fired back.
Multiple news outlets reported that police fired back and hit one person, who was later pronounced dead. A Swat team was called to help deal with the remaining people in the west Charlotte home, but they all came outside peacefully, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police chief Kerr Putney told reporters gathered outside the home on Sunday night.
The names of the person killed and the injured officer have not been released. The name of the person killed was not released. Police also did not give out the name of the officer injured, but said on Monday morning she was recovering from the ankle wound.
Police chief Kerr Putney told reporters at the scene late on Sunday that everyone in the home had come outside and was being interviewed to determine who had fired at the officers. Putney did not say late on Sunday how many people were in the home when the shooting happened. The chief said investigators were speaking to them, but hadn’t decided whether any of them would face charges.
No charges have been filed. “The officers who responded from patrol surrounded the house. Swat came in. Negotiators came in, and got everyone who was in the house out,” Putney said.
Police did not release any additional information on Monday morning, including who the arrest warrant had been issued for and what charges were on the warrant.
