The Sydney Opera House has been evacuated as part of a police operation in around Circular Quay and Manly on Thursday afternoon. Police operations around Circular Quay and Manly which saw the Sydney Opera House evacuated just after lunchtime on Thursday had concluded by mid-afternoon.
Police confirmed an operation was taking place but no further information was available. NSW police said the operation, which led to ferry chaos and the forecourt of the Opera House being cleared, was a “precautionary measure”.
The forecourt of the landmark was cleared at around 2pm with police erecting metal barriers. “Following information on social media, police conducted an operation in the vicinity of the Opera House and Manly as a precautionary measure,” police said.

The bar below the Opera House was closed and tourists were milling around Circular Quay.

The 1.20pm ferry from Manly to Circular Quay was cancelled and the 1.40pm ferry delayed as part of the operation, according to a Department of Transport spokesman. The forecourt of the Opera House was evacuated at around 2pm with police erecting metal barriers.
Other ferries were continuing to operate. A Sydney Opera House tour guide said she had been leading tourists around the building when police arrived.
“My tour was stopped mid-tour ... now I can’t get back in,” she said.The operation caused the cancellation of the 1.20pm ferry from Manly to Circular Quay and the 1.40pm ferry to be delayed.
