Version 0 of 1.

David Cameron is hunting for a deputy spokesperson and he’s willing to pay as much as £117,800 for the right candidate.

Downing Street has placed an advertisement for the “incredible opportunity” on websites including PR Week and, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the Guardian.

The successful candidate, who must be an “experienced and confident individual, will provide “trusted advice” to the prime minister as well as deputising for official spokesman Helen Bower. They will work with the head of news, Nicola Hudson, and take over from Christian Cubitt.

Part of the role, a two-year fixed appointment with the “possibility of extension”, will be to “motivate and develop a committed, high-performing No 10 press office team”.

The ad certainly doesn’t sugar coat the demanding nature of the role, which comes with a salary band of £62,000 to £117,800 – approaching Cameron’s own salary of £142,500.

“Working in the No 10 press office involves working under pressure frequently and to immovable deadlines as well as routine out of hours work, including duties, and some travel,” says the ad. “A willingness to undergo DV [developed vetting for security] clearance is also required.”
