Official: 2 Palestinians killed in Gaza-Israel border clash
(about 2 hours later) | |
JERUSALEM — Two Palestinians were killed in clashes with soldiers on the border between the Gaza strip and Israel, a Palestinian health ministry official said.
Ashraf al-Kidra said they were shot during confrontations Friday afternoon.
Israel’s military said that Palestinians rushed the Gaza border and tried to damage the security fence. It said Palestinians rolled burning tires and threw rocks at soldiers.
Soldiers called on them to stop and fired warning shots in the air. When they persisted, the troops fired “at rioters posing a threat of infiltration,” the military said.
Violence erupted in mid-September over tensions at Jerusalem’s holiest site and quickly spread across Israel and the West Bank. The violent unrest later reached the Gaza strip, which is ruled by the Islamic militant group Hamas.
Over the past four months, Palestinian attackers using guns, knives and cars have killed 24 Israelis and an American student in near daily assaults on civilians and soldiers. Some 145 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire; 100 said by Israel to have been attackers. The rest died in clashes.
Israel says the violence is being fanned by a Palestinian campaign of lies and incitement spread by religious and political leaders and on social media. The Palestinians say it is rooted in anger stemming from frustrations at not achieving statehood.
