Officers were called to a property in Sunny Bank Road, Helmshore at 22:40 GMT on Friday after concerns were raised for the welfare of a woman. The 60-year-old was found with multiple stab wounds at a property in Sunny Bank Road, Helmshore at 22:40 GMT on Friday after concerns were raised for her welfare.
Paramedics also attended and the 60-year-old was pronounced dead. She is believed to be Sadie Hartley, Lancashire Police said. A formal identification is yet to take place.
A police spokesman said: "The death is being treated as suspicious and a police cordon is in place." No arrests have been made.
Ms Hartley was last seen at a conference in Manchester on Thursday and is believed to have returned home, police said.
Det Supt Andy Murphy said: "We have a large team of detectives dedicated to following all lines of enquiry.
"Specialist officers are supporting Sadie's family at this difficult time."
A post-mortem examination is due to take place and a police cordon remains at the scene.
