At least eight people have been killed and many others wounded after a group of militants attacked a university in Pakistan. At least 21 people have been killed after a group of militants attacked a university in Pakistan.
Security forces are still believed to be battling the gunmen inside the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda, northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack which wounded 50 people.
Four of the gunmen have reportedly been killed by security forces and the remaining militants it is not known how many there were in total have been contained to two blocks inside the university. The battle between security forces and the gunmen ended several hours after the gunmen stormed the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda, in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Police said the militants managed to enter the university buildings on Wednesday morning  after scaling the walls of the university. Three students, at least one professor, policemen and guards all lost their lives in the violent attack. It is feared the death toll could rise to 40, according to a security official.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Four of the gunmen have reportedly been killed by security forces and the remaining militants it is not known how many – have been contained to two blocks inside the university.
Of the deaths, at least three are believed to be students, said Deputy Inspector General Saeed Wazir. Earlier reports said that a professor had also been killed. Earlier, explosions were heard inside the campus. Soldiers were seen entering the university as ambulances parked outside the main gate.
“All students have been evacuated from the hostels, but militants are still hiding in different parts of the university and some students and staff are stuck inside,” he said. Police said the militants managed to enter the campus buildings on Wednesday morning after scaling the walls of the university, which is situated 35km away from Peshawar.
Soldiers could be seen entering the campus as ambulances lined up outside the main gate, ready to tend to the injured. “All students have been evacuated from the hostels, but militants are still hiding in different parts of the university and some students and staff are stuck inside,” said Deputy Inspector General Saeed Wazir, adding that 70 per cent of the students had been rescued.
