Streets becoming slippery Monday night amid widespread refreezing
(about 4 hours later) | |
Motorists and pedestrians across the Washington region were warned Monday night that runoff from melted snow and ice could refreeze on streets, roads and walks as temperatures fell.
In addition to melting brought about by chemicals, temperatures ranged above freezing Monday afternoon in large parts of the area as bright sunshine prevailed for several hours.
But not all of the water produced by the melting evaporated or ran off.
In a bulletin issued shortly before 8 p.m., the National Weather Service said the refreeze could affect the entire region, from West Virginia to Southern Maryland.
Temperatures were expected to remain at subfreezing levels throughout Monday night, the weather service said.
It said that any water from the earlier melting would freeze again, creating icy conditions on roads and sidewalks.
Motorists were called on to exercise “extra caution” by the weather service, which noted that icy spots would be hard to see. | Motorists were called on to exercise “extra caution” by the weather service, which noted that icy spots would be hard to see. |
