BERLIN — Police in the German city of Cologne are appealing to the public for help in finding a man who was seen buying chemicals that could be used to create an explosive mixture.

Police said Tuesday the man, described as being of Middle Eastern appearance and aged between 45 and 50, bought the chemicals at a home improvement store in the nearby town of Pulheim on Friday.

A police statement stressed it isn’t clear that the chemicals were meant to be used for any criminal purpose. It didn’t specify the quantity or type of substances bought, but said they are normally used for cleaning.

A store employee informed police about the purchase, saying the man spoke good German.

Cologne’s annual Carnival starts next week.
