The case of the estate of Monsignor Waldemar Irek has riveted this predominantly Catholic nation ever since the 54-year-old priest’s death in 2012, when the boy’s mother came forward with the claim. To prove her case, she had Irek’s body exhumed for a DNA test which confirmed he was the boy’s father. The case of the estate of Monsignor Waldemar Irek has riveted this predominantly Catholic nation ever since the 54-year-old priest’s death in 2012, from the revelation of the priest’s affair to the mother’s struggle to claim inheritance for son, capped by the exhumation of the priest’s body for the DNA matching which clinched her case.
Marek Poteralski, spokesman for the court in Wroclaw, said Wednesday the court ruled that the boy was Irek’s closest family and the sole inheritor, according to the law. The verdict is subject to appeal by Irek’s mother and niece. Irek was the rector of the Papal Faculty of Theology in the southwestern city of Wroclaw. Because of the efforts of the boy’s mother, Wieslawa Dargiewicz, church authorities renounced any claim to Irek’s property.
TVN24 said Irek left a house, a car and some precious old furniture. Marek Poteralski, spokesman for the court in Wroclaw, said Wednesday the court ruled that the boy was Irek’s closest family and for that reason his sole heir. The decision was announced on Monday, Poteralski told The Associated Press, adding that it was not the court’s task to estimate the value of the inheritance.
“It was a road through hell, through humiliation and pain but I feel satisfied and happy now,” Dargiewicz said on TVN24. “My son will have at least a part of what his father has promised him.”
Irek “promised to leave everything to him,” Dargiewicz said.
The verdict is subject to appear and it should be clear within three weeks’ time whether Irek’s mother and niece wish to challenge the decision, Poteralski said.
TVN24 said Irek left a house, a car and some precious old furniture and art.
