Man shot by sheriff’s deputy was trying to commit carjacking, authorities allege
Version 0 of 1. A man who was shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Waldorf on Thursday was apparently trying to commit a carjacking at the time, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said Friday. The sheriff’s office said that the man, who suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and buttocks that were not life-threatening, has been charged with first- and second-degree assault and possessing a stolen handgun. He was identified Friday as Anthony Darrell Taylor, 23. Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Diane Richardson also identified the deputy who shot Taylor as Larry Blake, who has been on the force for seven years. Blake is on administrative leave while the department investigates the shooting. On Thursday at 2:10 p.m., Blake saw Taylor standing in the intersection of Post Office Road and St. Charles Parkway. Taylor was arguing with the driver of an SUV stopped at a red light and appeared to be trying to pull the door open, Richardson said. On Friday, the sheriff’s office said that the driver of that vehicle said he did not know Taylor. He thought Taylor was trying to steal his SUV. Taylor ran away when Blake approached him, and Blake shot him when he saw Taylor turning toward him while reaching for his waistband. Deputies learned afterward that Taylor was carrying a handgun which had been stolen during a burglary in Pennsylvania. Richardson said she does not know how long ago the burglary happened, or how Taylor obtained the weapon. |
