Version 0 of 3.

A householder shot through a bedroom door by burglars was alone in his mansion at the time, police have said.

Armed raiders broke into The Old Rectory in Sible Hedingham, Essex, in the early hours of Saturday and left the victim with "life-changing" leg injuries.

The unnamed man, in his 40s, remains in an undisclosed hospital.

Two intruders threatened the victim before firing at him through a locked door. They then fled empty-handed.

Police are still searching for the two gunmen and treating the crime as an "aggravated burglary".

An Essex Police spokesman said inquiries would continue on Sunday, following a forensic search of the grade II-listed property and house-to-house inquiries on Saturday.

The wounded man was found by officers, called just before 04:40 GMT.

Det Sgt Mark Cadd, of Essex Police, has said he "urgently" wanted to find the robbers who "seriously" injured the victim.

"He locked himself in a bedroom and it is believed a gun was then fired through the door injuring him.

"This was an extremely distressing incident for the victim and he has suffered life-changing injuries which have left him in great pain.

Any witnesses who spotted anything suspicious in the village should contact police, he added.

The two suspects are white, in their 20s, of slim build and wore dark clothing. One is described as bald.
