Man shot dead in Dublin 'reprisal' Man shot dead in Dublin 'reprisal' for boxing weigh-in murder
(35 minutes later)
A man has been shot dead in Dublin. A man has been shot dead in Dublin in what police believe could be a reprisal for a murder at a boxing match weigh-in on Friday.
Gardaí (Irish police) believe the killing could be a reprisal for the murder of David Byrne at a boxing match weigh-in on Friday. The man in his 50s was shot on Poplar Row, North Strand in the north inner city just three days after David Byrne, 33, was murdered at the Regency Hotel.
The shooting happened in the north of the city on Monday evening. Dissident republicans have claimed they carried out the hotel shooting.
Gardaí were alerted to the shooting at 19:45 local time. The latest shooting happened at 19:45 GMT and it is understood four men were involved in the attack.
It happened at Poplar Row in Ballybough. The first murder was claimed by a group purporting to be the Continuity IRA, a dissident republican splinter faction, but that drew scepticism from detectives immersed in gangland investigations.
It is understood four men were involved in the attack. They are thought to have fled the scene in a Volkswagen Golf. Speaking about the latest shooting, Irish Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said it as "another deplorable example of the ruthlessness of gangland criminals".
The road has been sealed off to traffic and a large number of gardaí and detectives are present at the scene. "It seems that some gangs are intent on waging a feud where human life counts for nothing," she said.
