Germany train crash: Eight passengers seriously injured after trains collide in Bavaria Germany train crash: 'Several killed' and scores injured as two trains collide in Bavaria
(35 minutes later)
Around eight people were seriously injured and 12 more slightly hurt in a train crash in the southern state of Bavaria on Tuesday, German police said. At least two people have died and up to 100 have been injured after two trains crashed into each other in southern Germany, according to local reports.
Local media reported that several carriages were overturned after two trains collided and one was derailed near Bad Aibling in the southeastern corner of Germany.  Police said one of the trains had derailed and several carriages overturned, and said it had been confirmed there had been some deaths following what was described as a "head-on collision".
The early morning crash took place near Bad Aibling in Bavaria, but it was too early to establish the exact number of unjuries.
A spokeswoman for police in Upper Bavaria said eight rescue helicopters were standing on a lawn near the entrance to the town of Bad Aibling and further rescue staff were on the way to the scene of the crash.
The crash involved two regional trains and took place shortly before 7am local time (6am GMT), on a stretch of the track between Rosenheim and Holzkirchen.
At around 9am (8am GMT), police spokesman Stefan Sonntag told AP there were still some people trapped inside the wreckage of the trains.
Mr Sonntagg said two deaths were confirmed and that there were many injured, but that confusion at the scene meant it was impossible to provide specific numbers.
"This is the biggest accident we have had in years in this region and we have many emergency doctors, ambulances and helicopters on the scene," he said.
Local broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk 24 said the crash had taken place near a sewage treatment plant amid a spell of cold weather in southern Bavaria. Images posted to social media showed the crash site appeared to be in a wooded area next to a canal. BR 24 said the nearest main road was frozen at the time of the crash, and that the incident was causing extensive local transport delays.
