Fairfax County says there was a shooting incident overnight at Reston Hospital Fairfax County police investigate shooting incident at Reston hospital
(about 3 hours later)
Police in Fairfax County said there was an overnight shooting at Reston Hospital. But they cautioned that there is “no current safety threat” in the early morning hours in a Twitter message. Police in Fairfax County said a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound shot his way early Wednesday morning into Reston Hospital Center. Authorities said there is “no current safety threat” to the public.
Authorities said there is an investigation underway but few details as to what happened were immediately available. No one was injuried at the hospital, according to police. No one else was injured in the incident and the man suffered non life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. when a 53-year-old man from Loudoun County “showed up” at the hospital with “what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said Don Gotthardt, a spokesman for Fairfax County police.
The man tried to get into a side entrance of the hospital, but the doors were locked. He then fired one round from a gun and broke the glass, according to police. Hospital personnel saw that the man was injured and tried to give him medical aid, but he then displayed a handgun and fired another round inside the hospital, according to Gotthardt.
Police didn’t know early Wednesday where the suspect shot or where the round went.
Hospital security and medical personnel “quickly convinced” the man to “put the weapon down,” Gotthardt said. After he put down the gun, they treated him and he was later transferred to Inova Fairfax hospital.
Police said the incident is under investigation and the hospital was open and running under its normal operations.
