Bouke Edskes rarely raises his voice. But when the Richard Montgomery swimming and diving team needs a cheer to get fired up before a meet, Edskes is often at the center of it. “We were hoping to beat either Georgetown Prep or Gonzaga [at Metros], but overall I’m happy with the third place because that was first out of all the public schools,” said Edskes, who has yet to make a decision on where he’ll swim in college. “I think we’ll win regionals and hopefully send a lot of kids to states.”“We were hoping to beat either Georgetown Prep or Gonzaga [at Metros], but overall I’m happy with the third place because that was first out of all the public schools,” said Edskes, who has yet to make a decision on where he’ll swim in college. “I think we’ll win regionals and hopefully send a lot of kids to states.”

Edskes’ last two events of the weekend were his most memorable, however. The Rockets showcased superior depth in the relays, setting a new Montgomery County record in the 200 medley (1:34.34) behind Matt Nguyen (backstroke), Kenny Afolabi-Brown (breaststroke), Edskes (butterfly) and Greg Afolabi-Brown (freestyle). Then Edskes capped his night with a lead-off swim in the Rockets’ 200 free relay, which also netted a county record (1:26.26).Edskes’ last two events of the weekend were his most memorable, however. For that to happen, Richard Montgomery will have to battle it out with Churchill, Walter Johnson and Bethesda-Chevy Chase for the boys’ title. Churchill (5-0) finished in fourth at Metros and gave the Rockets (4-1) their only loss of the season back in December, when a club meet forced Richard Montgomery to compete without many of its top swimmers. Walter Johnson and B-CC, which placed fifth and sixth at Metros, respectively, will also be firmly in the mix.For that to happen, Richard Montgomery will have to battle it out with Churchill, Walter Johnson and Bethesda-Chevy Chase for the boys’ title.
