Russian PM warns of world war in Syrian conflict Russian PM warns against foreign ground action in Syria
(about 3 hours later)
MUNICH — Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev says the use of ground troops in the Syrian conflict could result in world war. MUNICH — Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has warned other nations against committing their troops to a ground action in Syria, saying it would only exacerbate the conflict.
Medvedev was quoted as saying in an interview published late Thursday by the German newspaper Handelsblatt that “a ground operation draws everyone taking part in it into a war.” Medvedev, speaking in an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt, the text of which was released by his office Friday, said “a ground operation draws everyone taking part in it into a war.”
When asked about a recent proposal from Saudi Arabia to send in ground troops to Syria, the prime minister answered that “the Americans and our Arab partners must consider whether or not they want a permanent war.” Commenting on a Saudi proposal to send troops to Syria and the possibility of U.S. involvement in ground action, Medvedev said there wouldn’t be a quick victory, rather a “permanent war.” He reaffirmed that Russia, which has conducted air campaign in Syria since Sept. 30, has no intention to engage in ground action.
Medvedev criticized Western powers’ refusal to collaborate with Russia in Syria. The prime minister said ties at the level of defense departments are only sporadic. Medvedev said the conflict must be resolved through talks, not by opening another front in the war.
