Six children are being treated for their injuries after a woman in her eighties drove a car into them outside a school in Liverpool.
Merseyside police confirmed on Friday afternoon that police officers, firefighters and paramedics had attended the scene of a road traffic collision on Belvidere Road near Princes Park in south Liverpool.
A passerby reported witnessing a collision involving a yellow Peugeot and a number of pedestrians. The car reportedly mounted the curb and collided with the girls while they were waiting to catch a bus.
A spokeswoman for the North West ambulance service (NWAS) said eight people were treated at the scene outside the Belvedere Academy secondary school. Two casualties had critical injuries, three had serious injuries and three had minor injuries, she added.
Six of the injured, aged 11 to 13, were taken to Alder Hey hospital, and one 17-year-old was taken to the Royal Liverpool hospital. The driver of the Peugeot – a woman in her 80s – was treated at the scene.
Police said: “None of the injured children are believed to be in a life-threatening condition in hospital.”
Joe Anderson, the mayor of Liverpool, tweeted: “Let’s hope and pray for the children hurt in the car accident outside Belvedere school. Our thoughts are with them and their families.”
The school on Belvidere Road, near Princes Park, is an independent girls’ secondary school for 11 to 19-year-old students. In a statement, Dave Kavanagh, assistant principal at the school said: “There has been a road traffic incident outside the school at about 3.30pm. Police are dealing with the incident.
“The parents of the pupils affected have been informed and parents are coming to pick the girls up because the roads are closed so our bus service isn’t running. We hope they are going to be OK and that they make a speedy recovery. We are all very concerned.”
Police have closed a number of roads surrounding the crash site and have warned motorists to avoid the area where possible as the roads will remain closed until investigation work can be carried out. |
