Austrian Supreme Court rejects appeal in Nazi property case | Austrian Supreme Court rejects appeal in Nazi property case |

VIENNA — Austria’s supreme court has rejected a Jewish author’s appeal of a fine for defrauding the state in seeking compensation for property taken by the Nazis.
Stephan Templ, now serving a one-year prison sentence, was convicted of hiding the existence of his aunt — who was also eligible for compensation — when seeking reparations on his mother’s behalf. The judge argued that led to Templ’s mother being awarded double what she should have.
The court, in a verdict published Wednesday, rejected Templ’s appeal of a 550,000 euro fine — more than $600,000.
Newspapers report recently found documents showing that Templ did list the aunt. It’s unclear whether his lawyer will push for a new trial.
Templ’s supporters say he is being punished for his book documenting widespread Nazi expropriations in Vienna.
