The conservative Law and Justice party enjoyed a clearcut victory in the Polish presidential and the parliamentary elections last October. But since then the party has put through bills in parliament curtailing the independence of the judiciary, media and civil service. Despite president Andrzej Duda arguing that democracy is not endangered in Poland, pro-democracy campaigners have warned that the recent legislations could pave way for authoritarian rule.
