At least six people were fatally shot in western Michigan on Saturday in what police described as a “random act of violence” by a gunman who remained at large. Police said a suspect was in custody after a gunman killed at least six people in apparently random shootings around Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Around 10pm on Saturday two people were shot outside an automotive dealer in Kalamazoo, Michigan, about 140 miles west of Detroit. A separate fatal shooting occurred outside a restaurant in a neighboring township, leaving four dead. “These appear to be random acts of violence and we’re actively and aggressively investigating this, at this time,” said Jeff Hadley, chief of Kalamazoo public safety. Police were searching for a suspect described as a white male in his 40s to 50s, driving a blue mid-size Chevrolet SUV. Multiple state agencies were involved in the investigation, including Michigan state police, the Kalamazoo department of public safety, and Kalamazoo county sheriff’s office. At 1.20am local time on Sunday Hadley told a local news station that a “strong suspect” was in connection over the shootings.
Wood-TV reported that a woman was shot multiple times earlier in the evening but it was unclear whether the incidents were related. “That person is being brought back [to public safety headquarters] and we’re trying to get information out as quick as possible to calm people’s fears up there in the community.”
Liutenant Dale Hinz of Michigan state police said: “It’s important for the public to know that we believe we have our suspect in custody. We believe this situation has been resolved at this point.”
Hinz said the suspect was apprehended around 12.40am in downtown Kalamazoo, driving driving a vehicle matching the description of a dark-colored Chevy HHR captured on CCTV at the auto dealership.
Weapons were recovered from the suspect’s vehicle, police said.
Police earlier had said their suspect was a white male in his 40s or 50s.

“We’ve had several shootings here tonight, in the county and the city of Kalamazoo,” Undersheriff Paul Matyas told Wood-TV. “They all appear to be related. We have multiple people dead. In summary what it looks like is we have somebody just driving around, finding people and shooting them dead in their tracks.”
