KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A man drove around the Kalamazoo, Michigan area shooting people at three locations Saturday evening including a Cracker Barrel restaurant and a Ford dealership, leaving six dead and three injured, two of whom are in critical condition, law enforcement officials said. A massive manhunt was under way for the suspect, described as an older white male, perhaps in his 50s, driving a dark blue vehicle. Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said a suspect was detained early Sunday in downtown Kalamazoo. Matyas said weapons were found in the man’s vehicle and he did not resist when approached by law enforcement officers.
Officials believe the shootings were random and not targeting particular people. “The threat to the public is over,” he said early Sunday.
“We have our worst case scenario,” said Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas. “These are random murders.” Police described the suspect taken into custody as a 45-year-old white male from Kalamazoo County.
Officers are questioning him, Michigan State Police Lt. Dale Hinz told WWMT-TV.
Matyas said earlier that police believed the shootings were random and not targeting particular people, describing it as a “worst case scenario.”
He said the shootings began about 6 p.m. local time. In addition to the restaurant and the car dealership, the third location was an apartment complex.
