Earlier Saturday, local newspaper O Globo published what it said was a leaked email that Rio de Janeiro city Mayor Eduardo Paes sent to the International Olympic Committee warning of a “heightened risk” the extension would not be done on time.
According to the report, Paes suggested that the IOC consider creation of a high-speed bus lane as a backup plan. The new metro line is costing around 10.3 billion Brazilian reais ($2 billion) and O Globo said the main obstacle to its delivery was a delay in additional funding.
