Man arrested and charged in sexual assault in Arlington

Police in Arlington have arrested and charged a 19-year-old man for his alleged role in a sexual assault that happened in the summer and believe he may be involved in a series of assaults along a bike trail. Santos Efrain Vasquez-Lopez of Arlington was charged with intent to defile and is being held without bond at the county’s jail. He was taken into custody Feb. 24. The attack he is believed to have been involved in happened Aug. 1, in the 4300 block of N. Pershing Drive. Police said around 11:26 p.m., a 25-year-old woman was walking home. A man, later identified as Lopez, grabbed her from behind, police said, and pushed her to the ground. He held her down, covered her mouth and tried to take off her shorts, according to police. She bit one of Lopez’s hands before he fled the area. Detectives were able to identify a man matching the description given by the victim. With DNA analysis from a state laboratory, Lopez’s involvement in the incident was confirmed by the police. Police said they are investigating his possible involvement in what they are calling a “series of assaults” along the bike trail in that area in the summer.
