A prison officer was stabbed in an incident involving an inmate at a West Yorkshire young offenders institution.

The Prison Service said the officer, from HMYOI Wetherby, was treated and discharged from hospital following the incident on Thursday.

The service said in a statement that violence against "hardworking staff would not be tolerated".

In February, the institution was placed briefly on lockdown following a number of attacks on staff.

Following the lockdown, The Prison Officers Association (POA) said staff had withdrawn to a place of safety because there was a feeling management was not offering sufficient protection.

An HM Inspectorate of Prisons report on Wetherby a year ago said that reducing the number of assaults between inmates and prison staff should be a priority
