(about 4 hours later)
Two-year-old twins who died after apparently falling into a pond in Dalgety Bay in Fife have been named locally as Rhys and Shaun Scott. The parents of twin brothers who drowned in a fish pond at the family home in Fife have spoken about the loss of their "miracle babies".
Police officers and Scottish Ambulance Service personnel were called at about 08:20 on Saturday after the boys were found in a fish pond. Rhys and Shaun Scott, who were two years old, were found in the pond on Saturday morning.
The toddlers were taken to hospital but were pronounced dead. They were taken by ambulance from the house in Dalgety Bay to Kirkcaldy's Victoria Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Their parents Mervyn Scott and Sarah Aitken are being supported by police and an investigation is underway. Police have said inquiries to establish the full circumstances are continuing.
'Concern' Their parents Mervyn Scott and Sarah Aitken are being supported by specialist police officers
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We received a call around 08:20 on Saturday following a report of concern for two children. In a statement issued through Police Scotland, they said: "We would like to thank everyone for their support at this unfortunate and difficult time.
"Two male twins, aged two-years-old, had reportedly drowned in a fish pond and officers attended with the Scottish Ambulance Service. "We have special thanks to all the medical staff, family, friends, neighbours and the police for their efforts, hard work and time spent helping and trying to revive our miracle babies.
"The children were taken to the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy where they sadly died. "Both boys were long awaited little soldiers who were full of love, happiness, fun and cheek.
"Officers are supporting the family at this time. Inquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing." "Individually and together they have touched the lives of everyone they met.
Cowdenbeath MSP Alex Rowley said: "This is awful news and it's every parent's worst nightmare. "We along with our family and friends are still in shock and devastated at such a tragic loss from such a 'freak' accident."
"The loss of two young lives from the same family is heartbreaking. The statement added: "They have been taken from us far too early and will be forever missed and loved.
"My thoughts and prayers, and those of the whole community, are with the family." "We wish to be left alone and be given the privacy needed to grieve."
