A new mother was stabbed in the chest on her doorstep after she told a group of teenagers to be quiet when they had woken her eight-week-old baby.

Donna Cross had reportedly “reached the end of her tether” when she shouted at the group outside her house in Chatham, Kent, on Tuesday night, telling them to be quiet.

Partner Jon Stone told Kent Online they did not realise Ms Cross had been stabbed until she felt blood on her chest.

“I thought she was going to die. All I could think of was our baby daughter being left without her mum,” he said.

Mr Stone said that after the attack the group ran away in the direction of a nearby estate.

Ms Cross was stabbed in the breast bone and lost around two and a half pints of blood, Mr Stone added. She was rushed to King’s College Hospital in London where she underwent surgery.

A spokesperson for Kent police said in a statement that officers had been called out on Tuesday night to a report of an assault in Southill Road, Chatham, where a woman was taken to hospital for treatment of her injuries. She has since been discharged from hospital.

“A 19-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and has since been released without charge,” the statement read, adding that enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
