Stephen Woolfe, UKIP MEP, was in his flat close to Maelbeek metro station when the attack happened.
"I heard the explosion, the building rocked. We saw people running from the station, cars were beeping trying to turn around," he told BBC Breakfast.
He said police had been on the scene very quickly and the increased presence a day later was reassuring.
"We have been through this in Britain and in Manchester where I'm from, Warrington, London, you've seen it across Northern Ireland, and I think you grow used to these things and the strength inside of you to carry on," he added.
