Flyby has said it is planning daily flights from Cardiff to London City Airports during the six week closure of the Severn Tunnel in September and October.

Flybe, which is the largest regional airline in Europe, is scheduling "rescue flights" for customers travelling between South Wales and the South East of England. Four departures are planned for weekdays and two a day on weekends during the closure.

One way fares start from £34.99.

While it might seem astonishing to fly between Cardiff and London, it is not the first time that Flybe has sought to plug a gap in travel options over short distances because of disruptions to other services.

In 2014, Flybe increased capacity on its Newquay to London Gatwick service when part of the rail line was damaged at Dawlish during severe winter storms.

"Flybe champions regional air travel and we hope these rescue flights will help alleviate the travel woes of the thousands of passengers displaced by the loss of the region’s direct rail services," said Vincent Hodder, Flybe's chief revenue officer.

The Severn Tunnel will shut on September 12 until October 21 to install electric cables that are expected to cut journey times between Swansea and London by 20 minutes.
