State Sen. Jamie Raskin is entering the crowded airways over Maryland’s 8th Congressional District with his first set of television spots, touting him as the only true progressive in the nine-candidate Democratic primary field.

His campaign said the three 15-second ads will start this week and run through the April 26 primary. They focus on his legislative record in Annapolis, climate change, and gun control.

“They all say they’re against gun violence,” a woman’s voice says in one spot that begins with an image of all nine candidates at a debate. “But Jamie Raskin is the only Democrat for Congress who led the fight for tougher gun laws.” It refers to the 2013 assault weapons ban he introduced with then-State Sen, and now Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh.

Raskin joins two other candidates on the air — wine retailer David Trone, who has saturated radio and television for weeks on issues that include choice and gun violence, and former WJLA anchor Kathleen Matthews, who ran an early ad last summer admonishing Republicans for opposing Planned Parenthood. In more recent ads she has also taken on gun violence as well as pay equity for women.
