The trial at Woolwich Crown Court in south-east London is expected to last eight months. Mr Wright told jurors: "These men were, we say, indifferent to the carnage that was likely to ensue.
"Some of the men you see in the dock are those who were prepared to sacrifice their own lives."
The flights were destined for cities across North America, including Canada, Montreal, Toronto, San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Washington, the court heard.
