Pakistan arrests Indian intelligence officer, lodges protest | Pakistan arrests Indian intelligence officer, lodges protest |
(about 3 hours later) | |
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan arrested an Indian intelligence officer for his involvement in “subversive activities” in the Muslim-majority country and lodged a protest with India’s envoy over the case, security officials and the foreign ministry said Friday.
“We arrested an officer of Indian intelligence agency RAW yesterday for his involvement in acts of terrorism,” a security official said.
Another official said the arrest was made in the southwestern Baluchistan province. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media on the record.
Pakistan’s foreign ministry said Friday it summoned the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad to lodge a protest over the Indian officer’s illegal entry into Pakistan. It said the man was involved in violence in Baluchistan province and the city of Karachi.
Vikas Swarup, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman, confirmed Pakistan raised the issue with the Indian envoy but denied the arrested man had any ties to the government, saying he was retired from the navy.
“The said individual has no link with Government since his premature retirement from Indian Navy,” Swarup said. “We have sought consular access to him. India has no interest in interfering in internal matters of any country and firmly believes that a stable and peaceful Pakistan is in the interest of all in the region.”
India has said militants from Pakistan were linked to a January assault on one of its air bases that killed seven Indian soldiers.
