There is mounting cross-party pressure on ministers to drop plans to force every school in England to become an academy by 2020. Leaders of the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat groups in the Local Government Association have combined to oppose plans to force all English schools to become academies.
Local government representatives of the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats have sent a joint letter to the Observer newspaper. In a joint letter to the Observer, they urge ministers to reconsider the plans.
The Local Government Association says the plan has caused "enormous concern" across the party political divide. The LGA says the plan to remove all schools from council control has caused "enormous concern" .
